Carnival Costume Mentoring Programme Continues to Inspire Creativity, Confidence and Community
Sun 21 Jun 2026Over the weekend, UKON Careers delivered a highly successful Carnival Connections event at Barking Market, bringing together creativity, wellbeing and community engagement in the heart of Barking.
The event formed part of our wider pre carnival programme, designed to improve wellbeing, reduce social isolation, encourage physical activity and strengthen community connections through inclusive creative participation and supported volunteering opportunities.
Community impact and engagement
We are delighted to report that we engaged with 240 local residents across the course of the day. Families, children and individuals of all ages took part in a range of creative activities, including carnival flag making and arts and crafts workshops.
The market space was transformed into a vibrant and welcoming environment, with music, dance and creative expression at the centre of the experience. The event also provided a valuable opportunity to promote supported volunteering, with a significant number of residents expressing interest in becoming involved in the Barking and Dagenham Carnival.
Supporting wellbeing through creativity
Carnival Connections is designed to support residents who may experience isolation or barriers to participation, including young people, families, older adults and individuals referred through social prescribing routes. The programme offers accessible creative activities and flexible volunteering opportunities that enable people to participate at their own pace, build confidence and strengthen social connections.
The impact of the programme was clearly reflected in feedback from participants:
“I saw the event in Barking and it is a great activity to take part in. Participating put my mind at rest, helped my mental wellbeing and encouraged my creativity.”
“I decided to attend because my daughter was taking part, and it was wonderful to be involved together as a family.”
“The event is inclusive and the volunteering opportunities are so good.”
Strengthening community and partnership outcomes
Carnival Connections also supports UKON Careers in strengthening delivery capacity through the development of supported volunteering models, improved coordination processes and enhanced inclusive practice. These opportunities contribute to staff development, partnership working and the delivery of high quality community led programmes.
The project aligns closely with Barking and Dagenham health and wellbeing priorities by reducing isolation, improving mental wellbeing and encouraging active participation in community life. It provides a valuable non clinical, community based approach that supports social prescribing and wider public health objectives.
Looking ahead
We would like to thank all residents, families and partners who attended and contributed to the success of the event. The level of engagement and enthusiasm demonstrates the value of creative, community focused interventions in strengthening local connections and improving wellbeing.
We look forward to continuing our Carnival Connections programme as we progress towards the Barking and Dagenham Carnival.
