Saluting We Mas at B&D Carnival 2025

|

This year, @we._.mas also chose the Book Man as their central figure – not just as tradition, but as a lens to explore stories of theft, loss & resistance.

Drawing on the legacy of ole mas, they reframed the Book Man to tell a deeper narrative: one that honours the extraordinary wealth, intellect and sophistication of Africa before colonisation. Inspired by the life and legacy of Mansa Musa, one of history’s most prosperous rulers & richest man in history! We Mas reminded us that Africa’s riches were not only material, but cultural, intellectual and artistic treasures still relevant today.

Their portrayal acknowledged past injustices while boldly celebrating the brilliance of our ancestors – amplifying voices too often silenced.

We Mas is not afraid to provoke thought and spark conversation. For those who may feel offended by their work, perhaps it’s simply a case of: “if the shoe fits…”

Outspoken. Unapologetic. Rooted in tradition, but reimagined for today – this is what makes carnival so powerful.
