Throwback to the Magic of the Moko Jumbies!

|

One of the most breathtaking moments of Barking & Dagenham Carnival 2025 was the incredible performance from @mokosomokow lead by @mramokosomokow – bringing the ancient tradition of the Moko Jumbie to our borough.

The word “Moko” comes from a West African deity, a protector who watches over the community. “Jumbie” means spirit. Together, the Moko Jumbie represents a powerful ancestral spirit, towering high on stilts to protect, bless & entertain the people.

Brought to the Caribbean through the African diaspora, the Moko Jumbie has become an iconic symbol of carnival – mixing history, spirituality & performance. Their height is more than spectacle – it’s a reminder of strength, resilience & cultural survival.

Seeing families and children in awe as Moko Somokow danced, balanced and towered over the crowds was unforgettable.

A massive thank you to @mokosomokow for keeping this tradition alive and sharing its beauty with our community.
