From the ancestral rhythms of African drumming to the sweet sounds of the steelpan, our carnival pulsed with the power of percussion.
The drum – in many cultures is more than music. It’s communication, storytelling, healing and a reminder of our roots. It brings people together, calling us to move as one.
The steelpan – born in Trinidad & Tobago, the steelpan is the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century. Created out of struggle and resilience, it transformed into a global symbol of creativity, identity and joy.
At Barking & Dagenham Carnival 2025, we proudly showcased both traditions:
Professional groups lighting up the stage
Families and residents joining hands-on sessions
Generations connecting through rhythm & culture
On behalf of the team, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to @drum_works @stepneyallsaints_adt @rosanosa_foundation @yaramarts @irokotheatre thank you for bringing the heartbeat of carnival to the residents of Barking & Dagenham.
Together, these instruments tell a story of heritage, innovation and unity … & ultimately, it brings healing – showing us that the heartbeat of carnival is, and always will be, the people.
